Digium Announces Keynote Speakers for Expanded AstriCon 2008

digium_logo.gifDigium recently announced that Brian Aker from Sun Microsystems/MySQL and Stefan Öberg from Skype are slated as keynote speakers for AstriCon '08. AstriCon, the world's largest, most informative gathering of expert developers and users of the popular Asterisk telephony platform, also announces expanded track sessions to this year's conference.

Aker, an open source hacker who has worked on various Apache modules, the Slash system and numerous storage engines for the MySQL database, currently serves as the Director of Architecture for MySQL AB. He plans on speaking on the topic of "The Parallel Evolution of MySQL; One Foot in the Commercial World and the other in the Open Source Community.

Öberg is vice president and general manager for Skype Telecom and Skype for Business. He has previously served in different positions at Tele2, the Swedish telecom operator, initially in Sweden and later in Estonia and Russia. Öberg is also the founder and chairman of Trigger Software, a wholly owned subsidiary to Tele2. His keynote will focus on VoIP for Business.

The contrast between the Skype network and software model and the open source nature of Asterisk and its underlying VoIP protocols may be a controversial topic, but one worthy of exploration. AstriCon is pleased to have secured Öberg as a keynote speaker, and it is certain that his insights will provide an excellent basis for discussions and deliberations well beyond the boundaries of the conference.

Digium, who is the creator and driving force behind Asterisk, anticipates that AstriCon '08 will be the largest and most successful event to date. This year the conference has expanded to five tracks with more than 60 topics to offer attendees more variety and options during this two-day event. These tracks include a business track, technical/introductory track, a carrier/large scale track and two advanced technical tracks.

AstriCon is the pioneer and longest-running event devoted to all things Asterisk, one of the most influential open source projects today. Attendees will learn about trends in Asterisk use, the growing Asterisk ecosystem, the newest applications and a wide range of technical topics from Asterisk developers, users and entrepreneurs.

AstriCon will be held from September 23-25 at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa in Glendale, Ariz. FierceVoIP and TMCnet will serve as media sponsors and Polycom and Sangoma will be the platinum sponsors for the event. There is a pre-conference tutorial day on September 23rd with various introductory as well as developer tracks.

Level 3 Extends Coverage of its E911 Infrastructure

level3.bmp Level 3 Communications has extended its relationship with Vixxi Solutions to support that company's network connectivity to E-911 private and dedicated infrastructures. Supporting Vixxi's deployment of FCC-compliant nomadic 911 services to VoIP service providers, Level 3 now serves as a primary provider of E-911 network connectivity for Vixxi.

Under the terms of this agreement, Vixxi will leverage Level 3's extensive geographic presence to route 911 calls to the Public Safety Answering Point over the nationwide 911 infrastructure, thereby expanding Vixxi's coverage to provide FCC compliant nomadic E-911 capabilities to service providers. Vixxi's database capability will identify the customer's location and then send the call to Level 3 with routing instructions to terminate the call to the geographically relevant PSAP.

VoIP Supply Ranked 66th on Everything Channel's CRN Fast Growth 100 List

VoIP Supply has been named to Everything Channel's CRN Fast Growth 100 List. The CRN Fast Growth 100 list recognizes the fastest growing solutions providers in the industry today based on 2 years' growth of net sales from calendar year 2005 to calendar year 2007 and the ability to deliver multi-vendor IT solutions, cutting-edge technologies, close customer relationships, demonstrate strong sales philosophies and business-oriented IT consulting.

VoIP Supply was ranked #66 based on sales growth of 81.91% and their demonstrated ability to deliver solutions to a wide variety of customer verticals.

"There has always been a perception that VoIP Supply is just another 'box pusher' due to our web based go-to-market strategy," said Benjamin P. Sayers, CEO of VoIP Supply. "VoIP Supply is continuing to grow at an aggressive rate by providing our customers with a wide variety of VoIP solutions, not just 'boxes.' Hopefully this award, along with our continued commitment to developing custom VoIP solutions to meet the ever changing needs of our customers, will eliminate this perception."

To be eligible for the 2008 Fast Growth 100, companies must be an IT solution provider; be based/headquartered in the U.S.; have had net sales of at least $1,000,000 in calendar year 2005; and be an independent company.

Virgin Mobile wants Liberty SIM in Superstores

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 12:30 PM CDT

Virgin Mobile has launched their market leader SIM only mobile deal, Liberty Sim, and is now available at Carphone Warehouse stores. Virgin Mobile now turns their attention to the non-specialists.

Virgin Mobile UK now supplies the £15 per months SIM only offer which offers customers 300 minutes and 300 text to Carphone Warehouse. This is the first time the SIM only deal has been offered on the high street.

Virgin Mobile bosses are now speaking to supermarkets with a view to extending the Liberty SIM only deal further.

The boss of indirect sales at Virgin Mobile stated: "We have mainly been successful in the direct channels so far. It is good to be able to build on that in a new channel after getting into Carphone. And we are in talks with the likes of the supermarkets to further build on this. We are the market leaders for Sim-only deals with a 29% market share. Sim-only is a new sub-category in the market place. We have found a very successful formula in it."

Guess Virgin Mobile want their Liberty SIM in most stores.

Sprint and Verizon HTC Touch Diamond and Pro details

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 10:28 AM CDT

The word going round is that the HTC Touch Diamond will be known as the HTC Victor when it hits Sprint in CDMA form and will sport a 528 MHz CPU along with 256MB ROM and 256MB RAM and 4GB internal memory.

The HTC Touch Diamond for Verizon will keep the original name, but will be pared down to a 400 MHz processor, 128MB RAM, and the rumour is the HTC Touch Diamond on Verizon won't have the 4GB internal memory but will incorporate a microSD card slot instead.

Then we have the HTC Touch Pro, or Raphael, this one will be known as the HTC Herman on Sprint's CDMA, and actually mirrors Verizon's version of the HTC Touch Diamond thus loses the 4GB internal memory.

With Verizon, they will stick with the original naming the HTC Raphael with 512MB ROM and steel frame rather than aluminium.

S60 Touch web browser on Nokia 5800 Tube leaked

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 09:38 AM CDT

There are many ways a user can interact with the new S60 Touch OS with its touch-input interface the S60 Touch UI can accommodate finger touch, but what is most important about the new S60 Touch OS is its web browser interface.

Currently Apple's iPhone Safari browser overshadows the touch-screen market in terms of intuitive use, and then there is the iPhone 2.0 OS which now makes web browsing faster and fuller featured.

So the real question is just how well will this new S60 Touch OS fare up against the likes of the dominant Apple iPhone 3G competition?

The answer is, we have no idea yet, but these couple of screens showing the touch based S60 web browser on a Nokia 5800 Tube does give us an idea what it will look like.

Somehow I think there will be more and more images of the S60 Touch OS filtering onto the net waves before too long.

T-Mobile 3G network goes live in Vegas and Austin

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 09:19 AM CDT

T-Mobile's 3G network services is going to be launched across 25 major markets within the US on 1st October, we have heard this before. But it appears that two of those 25 cities will be seeing T-Mobile's 3G network before the nationwide rollout.

Las Vegas gained T-Mobile's 3G network yesterday while Austin Texas gains the 3G network today the 6th August.

There are rumours going round that other cities will gain T-Mobile's 3G network services before the allotted date such as Minneapolis.

So it could mean that T-Mobile is actually sneaking out their 3G network services a few cities at a time before October 1st as scheduled.

So if anyone in a currently un-named city gains T-Mobile's 3G network before October 1st, other than those previously mentioned, it would be good if you could let us know so we can pass it on.

Long battery life but little else from Philips Xenium X600

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 09:04 AM CDT

Philips has added a new mobile phone to their Xenium collection, the Philips Xenium X600, and is apparently for mobile phone customers who want a little more than just another mobile phone they can use for days on end with charging.

Apparently the Philips Xenium X600 has an impressive and one of the longest battery lifes we have laid our eyes on, as the Philips Xenium X600 brings the user a whopping 16 hours of talk time and a staggering two months of standby time.

Battery wise the Philips Xenium X600 blows the competition out of the water, but in order to gain that lengthy battery life the X600 had to push out a few of the features we have come to expect from modern mobile phones.

The specs you are left with are tri-band GSM/GPRS, music player, as it's a clamshell design there are internal and external displays, and the good old microSD expansion slot.

Apple iPhone 3G now half price in Japan?

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 07:43 AM CDT

The Apple iPhone 3G just got cheaper in Japan as Softbank, the official Japanese partner to Apple's iPhone 3G dramatically reduced monthly tariffs.

Japan gained the Apple iPhone 3G on the same day as the UK, July 11th, so this prince drop by Softbank comes not even a month after the iPhone 3G's launch.

The good news for the Japanese iPhoners is Softbank has reduced the price of the Apple iPhone 3G by more than 50 percent.

Softbank's chopped down tariff prices for the monthly contract cost on the Apple iPhone 3G is slashed to 2990 yen, that's believe it or not just £14.00, from the original price of 7280 yen, which is about £34.50, and data charges have been reduced as well.

So why these dramatic cuts? Softbank says it's to attract more people to use the iPhone rather than being done because of sad sales, which has been predicted in the past as Japan already has more advanced mobile phones than the Apple iPhone 3G.

Popping out into the open for a photo-shoot the Samsung i7110c

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 07:21 AM CDT

The new i7110c mobile phone from Samsung has been revealed for the first time, and we can see that the Samsung i7110c is a candy-bar design.

A certain amount of mystery still surrounds the Samsung 17110c mobile handset, but the word is it sports a navigation cube that acts as a cursor control, 5 megapixel camera with flash, QVGA display, multimedia player, Bluetooth, FM tuner, and the trusty old microSD expansion slot.

Storage capability is still a mystery on this one, and we are not too sure if it will incorporate a GPS receiver, although you can expect it to run on Symbian.

Price wise and availability wise your guess is as good as ours, would be nice for Samsung to make some kind of official announcement on this i7110c mobile phone though. However, once we find out more we'll keep you informed.

Ikea UK offers new mobile phone service on T-Mobile

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 06:09 AM CDT

Seems anyone can enter the mobile arena these days and just to show that the newest company to step into the mobile waters is Ikea; yep you heard right, the Swedish company famous for their flat-packed furniture is offering a mobile phone service.

Ikea UK has launched a MVNO on T-Mobile to compete with the likes of ASDA and Tesco. Maybe with the addition of Ikea, the superstore will begin a mobile phone price war, which is always good for the customer who wants to grab a cheap second phone.

Ikea is offering a cheap and cheerful prepaid service which users will need to put out an initial £10.00 investment.

So although you shouldn't be expecting a self assembly mobile phone kit all neatly flat-packed in bubble wrap like their furniture, don't go expecting high end mobile phones, as we expect their mobile handset will be fairly basic fare.

Apple iPhone 3G unlock failing on Vodafone and more?

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 05:29 AM CDT

The Apple iPhone 2.0.1 seems to be having some problems, Vodafone customers who paid to have their iPhone 3G handset unlocked are complaining about failures connecting to iTunes.

Apparently those who have had the iPhone unlocked fail to connect to iTunes and immediately receive an error code "0xE8000001"

There are also reports coming in from a few other carriers as well, however, Vodafone sells the Apple iPhone 3G in 10 countries hence most of the complaints coming from Vodafone customers.

Seems this problem is popping up in Italy, Sweden, Spain, and other place across the globe.

No word on any fix for this problem hitting the net waves yet, but I'm sure someone will jump on this in due course. So how about you iPhoners out there, are you experiencing any of these problems or is your Apple iPhone 3G working fine?

Motorola EM30 ROKR: Has MOTO got something special here

Posted: 06 Aug 2008 05:08 AM CDT

Motorola are trying their hardest to get back on the mobile phone sales ladder by release 3 brand new phones, we have briefly told you about the ROKR EM25 and the ROKR EM28 and now we have the best of the trio, the all new Motorola EM30 ROKR.

We are actually liking the look of this mobile phone from Motorola, not only is it a mobile phone but it also transforms into a very good music player, should Sony Ericsson be running scared (Probably not). This particular model uses something called ModeShift technology, this is basically something that will change the illumination on the keypad dependant on your mood, the red keys will illuminate when in the music mode and when the keys are blue it means you are in phone mode.

You can go from talk to text with a touch of a button, it has colourful cues that will let you know what mode you are in, it also connects the sounds that obviously matters the most like family, favourite artists and friends.

The Motorola ROKR EM30 is filled with many features such as a 3.5mm stereo headset jack, Windows Media Player 11 provides the freedom to download music from more than 200 online music stores worldwide, seconds-fast MP3 downloads, high-fidelity audio, FM radio with Radio Data System (RDS) technology, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks support, 2 megapixel camera, sorry there is no auto-focus or UMTS support, it does have a microSD memory card slot for extra memory of up to 8GB.

The MOTOROKR EM30 is expected to be available worldwide in Q3 2008 starting with Taiwan.
